I have seen many daycare open and shut down so quickly because the foundation of owning the business lacks the passion needed to grow it. Starting a daycare is like planting a seed, you have to have the spirit to love and nurture. Childcare business is not just about business; it’s about nurturing young minds and those who will be working directly with those little ones. You have to find joy in this journey.
1. Dreams on Paper
Have you ever seen a business se up without a business plan? In my years of coaching and consulting, I have never seen a daycare owner who successful grow their business without a plan. You have to write down your business plan with heart. Imagine the plot of land where you wan to grow the seed. What kind of seed do you want to plant and how much seed will you be buying. That is exactly how your business plan works. Ensure to write out how your daycare will serve as a safe haven for the children and families.
2. Location
Choose your location with care. There are different daycare programs. Do you want to care for children in your home, or you envision the children in a big center. Every details you have written down in your business plan comes into play when you are choosing what kind of daycare business you are starting. In all, ensure that wherever you choose is a place where your service is needed in your community. Helping children blossom involves choosing a place where it is safe and convenient. Don't forget your daycare is the place where children's imaginations take flight.
3. Licensing
Obtaining a license takes a lot of process. In the state where I reside, you need to complete the daycare orientation. This is like an introduction to what you are trying to accomplish. Different entities are responsible to ensure that you in compliant with right location, materials and the appropriate safety and health codes. I believe this process is applicable in other states and countries. Getting a city license and then later a daycare license are different procedures. They process takes time, but it is well worth it for the children, families and community you will be serving. I am so happy for you already. Lets get going!
4. Insurance
Having a daycare comes with it's highs and lows, so you have to be ready for the stormy weather. Imagine a house that is built where there is a lot of stormy weather. Many of us have learned the hard way . If there is no insurance we may lose our homes and everything in it. Your license is also at stake if your daycare is not insured. Insuring the building as well as everyone coming in and out of your center shields your center from unexpected surprises.
5. Secure Funding
When starting your business, I always suggest that the owner start small. The bigger your center, the more the expense. For individuals who are struggling to get the money to start, make research on different funding and grants. Many states in the United states currently offer grants for daycare centers. Whenever you are also able to secure funding ensure to deposit it in a business account. Ensure not to mix your personal finances with your business accounting. Starting your daycare business is like planting seeds, soon, you will have a blooming garden of learning.
6. Hiring teachers with Heart
In the world where teachers are scarce, you may be tempted to hire anyone that comes your way. When hiring teachers ,consider teachers who understand the safety, health and developmental milestones of the children. Hire staff who believe in your organization values and mission. Picture them in a teaching and learning community that is joyful and progressing.
7. Policies and Procedures.
One f the requirements in the state where I reside is that you have to submit a parent handbook, employee handbook as well as your policies and procedures during the licensing stage. It is important that you create policies – your daycare’s compass. There are certain information that are important for your staff and families to know. Imagine them reading all your rules, this also allows them to trust you with their precious ones. These handbooks are like the stepping stones across a bubbling brook.
8. Marketing and Advertising
It is crucial to advertise your daycare. There are different means to market and advertise. Utilize the word of mouth by chatting with parents in the community playground, grocery store libraries and more. most importantly use social media as a tool to spread the wonderful news f your center. Market your daycare – spread the word like dandelion seeds.
Remember, you are shaping lives and building a future for the next generation
